SEO : The success of your online business

The latest techniques used by web masters for making the overall design, structure, and keyword pattern of your website relevant to search engines and web directories where the site has to been submitted. This technique, readily available by professionals in any quality SEO company or firm, allows search engines and directories, both human indexed, and spider indexed, to properly categorize and rank your site to be found when a user makes a search.

SEO explains the different search engines and web directories which keywords are most relevant to your website, so that they will obtain high ranking when someone makes a search for that keyword. Search engine ranking is very important because the majority of internet users will only look at the first sites listed whenever they do a search. Therefore, even if your page is listed 12th with Google for a given keyword, it may never be seen by web users, because they simply don’t scroll that far down the list.

For this reason, it’s very important that you include correct SEO strategies into your website. This may involve hiring an SEO firm or an SEO company for their different services.

Among the most common SEO services are articles. These are articles written with interesting or informative contents, but which have been structured specifically around a specific keyword. Therefore, if your company sells widgets, you might want to include an article on your website that uses the word “widgets company” throughout its paragraphs.

To come up with your keywords, try to think about the different ways that you’d search for your own website. Think about your services, your products, the information that you provide, and the type of customer you’ll want to attract. You can either make your own list, or use a computer program that is designed for coming up with the different words that will work the best for you. If you sign up an SEO company, they will likely have that sort of program available. It allows you to simply give an idea, such as “widgets”, and it will come up with all of the relevant search words that people use, and will tell you how many other sites already come up in search engines when that word or group of words is used.

There is a trick to writing a correct SEO based article. Although it may seem as though you can simply write a regular article and plug in your keyword, there are actually some other things that you need to consider. For example, if you use the keyword too frequently, many search engines will not recognize it as SEO, but will instead see it as SPAM.

This is where experts seem to disagree. While some believe that the keyword should be used once within the title of the article, and up to ten times throughout the rest of the text, others believe that it should only be used three more times, and a subheading is required.

In fact, there are a lot of different techniques that work very well for good SEO, but it is a matter of knowing what you’re doing, and being consistent about it. For this reason, it’s not a bad idea to hire either a freelance SEO writer, an SEO company, or a firm. This will ensure that you have the best odds at achieving those popular top search engine ranks.

Bigdaddy: Big changes on Google to come

Google has announced a major update that will affect the ranking of web pages in Google's index. In contrast to the usual algorithm updates, this update will be much bigger because it changes the way Google works behind the scenes. Google has given the update the name "Bigdaddy".

What is Google's Bigdaddy update?

Google uses a network of data centers with different IP addresses to answer search queries. These decentralized servers share the workload of indexing web sites.

The upcoming Bigdaddy update is not an algorithm update but a change in Google's data center infrastructure. It contains new code for sorting and examining web pages. According to Google's search engineer Matt Cutts, the update will be live in February or March.

Less spam, more content and a new Google spider?

Google is updating the data center infrastructure to handle potential spam problems such as 302 redirections or canonical URLs more efficiently. In addition, the new infrastructure will allow Google to develop more advanced algorithms and larger databases.

Another reason for the new data center infrastructure is that Google wants to be able to index different content types. Google is now testing a new search engine spider that is based on the Mozilla browser.

The new spider should be able to index more than traditional search engine spiders, possibly links within images, JavaScripts or Flash files.

How can you test how Bigdaddy will affect your rankings?

Some Google data centers that use the new Bigdaddy system are already online. For example, if you go to 66.249.93.104 you can test Google's new data center.

Google even wants your feedback. Click the "Dissatisfied? Help us improve" link at the bottom right of the result page. Enter your feedback and use the keyword bigdaddy so that Google knows that your feedback is about the new data center

Search engine news of the week

Google stands up to US government porn probe

"US Federal prosecutors preparing to defend a controversial Internet pornography law in court have asked Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and America Online to hand over millions of search records -- a request that Google is adamantly denying.

An attorney for the ACLU said Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL received identical subpoenas and chose to comply with them rather than fight the request in court."

Google moves into radio

"Google pitched their fork into the radio advertising market yesterday by agreeing to pay up to $1.2bn for a digital platform that will schedule and implement radio advertising airtime."

Google News is out of beta

"Google Inc. on Monday said has taken its online news service out of beta, and has added a feature that automatically recommends stories to subscribers of its personalized search offering."

Study suggests search engine advertisers waste time, money

"Many online advertisers are overpaying to have links to their business on search engines like Google and Yahoo, according to a study. [...] Researchers at Stanford Graduate School of Business say the auction system used for placement of the ads result in some users overpaying and others wasting time trying to figure out how to beat the system."

Can online press releases really increase your search engine rankings?

What are online press releases?

Online press releases are normal press releases that are distributed through the Internet. Popular online press release services are PRWeb and PRLeap. These services list your press release on their web sites and on a number of partner web sites.

Some people think that the links in these press releases can help the link popularity of a web site and thus increase the search engine rankings of a site.

What does Google say about online press releases?

Matt Cutts is the person in charge for fighting search engine spam on Google. He says the following about press releases and high rankings in his blog:

"A legit press release can get you written up by reporters, or editors/sites may subsequently choose to link to your site. But the actual content of the press release itself doesn’t directly affect a site. For example, those hyperlinks don’t help [the web site in the press release] in Google."

What does this mean to your web site?

Online press releases don't hurt your search engine rankings. However, they also don't increase your rankings (if no one writes about your business). The press release alone and its distribution on various web sites has no effect on your placement in search engines.

If you don't have something people really want to hear then do not send a press release. You should only use press release services if you have something newsworthy to say. If you have an interesting press release then your web site can be mentioned on many other sites.

What can you do if you don't have any news for a press release?

Press releases are not the only way to attract links to your site. The best links to your site are links from related sites that recommend your web site in the normal text.

Google to sell Search Engine and Radio Advertising

Google Inc. today announced that it has agreed to acquire dMarc Broadcasting, Inc. for as much as $1.2 billion depending on how well the company performs in the coming three years.

The California based company connects advertisers directly to radio stations through its automated advertising platform. The platform simplifies the sales process, scheduling, delivery and reporting of radio advertising, enabling advertisers to more efficiently purchase and track their campaigns. For broadcasters, dMarc's technology automatically schedules and places advertising, helping to increase revenue and decrease the costs associated with processing advertisements.

In simpler terms dMarc can do the kinds of things for radio advertisers and radio stations that Google Adwords does for web advertisers and website owners. Since many advertisers often run multimedia advertising campaigns, Google plans to integrate dMarc technology into the Google AdWords platform, creating a new radio ad distribution channel for Google advertisers.

The result should be able to better co-ordinate online ad campaigns with radio ad campaigns. Can television and magazine be far behind?

If you think that Google getting into television and magazine ad sales seems far-fetched, it should be noted that Google recently bought advertising in various print publications and resold it to online advertisers.

The goal was to put together more relevant and cost effective ad campaign for its online customers. The campaign was considered unsuccessful; however, it shows the search giant is not content to just dabble in the online sphere.

Alibaba.com - B2B Portal China, changes the name of its 3721 search engine

Alibaba.com Corporation, the operator of the world's largest online marketplace, confirmed yesterday the renaming of its "3721" search engine to "Alibaba", the Shanghai Securities News reported.
The company said it will commit more effort to promoting this service, which is regarded more as catering to domestic customers, the same report said.

The change is one of a number of moves by Alibaba to unify its services and businesses following a succession of big acquisitions last year, chief operating officer Li Qi was quoted as saying.
The company has other plans to develop the "3721" brand, which is more appropriate for its medium and small-sized business customers, according to public relations manager Lu Weixing.
Alibaba's founder and chief executive officer, Jack Ma, described the re-branding as a milestone for Alibaba after the completion of its historic deal last October to acquire Yahoo's Chinese business and sell 40 percent of its shares to Yahoo at a price of US$1 billion. He said it stands as a crucial mark of the successful integration of Alibaba and Yahoo China.
3721, along with Yahoo's search technology, the Yahoo China website and its communication and advertising business, is part of the Yahoo China deal. Ma revealed he sees five phases for the business merger.

"Currently, it seems the second phase has been completed smoothly and even better than my expectations. Now we are entering the third phase of reshaping," Ma said.
Founded in 1999 and based in Hangzhou, eastern China, Alibaba has approximately 3,000 employees, 14 regional sales offices across China and other offices in Hong Kong, Silicon Valley, Europe, and Beijing.

Google current updates -Jagger

Google is currently updating its ranking algorithm.
Webmasters have given this ranking algorithm update the name 'Jagger'.

The Jagger update is currently in its third stage which means that it will soon be over. If your rankings on Google fell over the last month, you website has probably been affected by this ranking algorithm change.

What Has Google Changed In The Ranking Algorithm Update?
Google wants to make its search engine results pages more relevant by removing some of the spam. It seems that the following elements are the most common reasons if your Google rankings dropped:

Hidden text on your web pages (especially text that is hidden in invisible CSS layers)
Paid links or other links that are considered outside of Google's quality guidelines
Overuse of internal links or anchor text as the sole source of optimization
What Can You Do If Your Website Rankings Have Dropped?
First of all, check if your web page use elements that might be considered spam. Your web pages might contain spam elements that you're not aware of.

If you use CSS on your web pages, search for style sheets that might be interpreted as spam attempts. Style sheets that contain visibility: hidden; might cause problems.

Make sure that you have links from the right web sites. While it is not important if a link is a reciprocal link or not, it is very important that the links are from related sites.
( Editor's Note: See: Link Exchanges: Do Reciprocal Links Still Improve Search Rank? )

Links from or to unrelated web sites probably won't negatively affect your rankings (if they did, your competitors could easily harm your rankings) but they also have no positive effect. Use the ARELIS 4 link popularity tool to make sure that your incoming links come from related web sites.

Do not overuse the same keyword in links to your web site. Better use different but related link texts for links to your site so that the links to your website look natural.
After having removed the spam elements from your pages, continue by optimizing and diversifying. Details can be found in our first article about this Google algorithm update.

If your web site rankings on Google have dropped, don't panic and follow the tips above. Chances are good that you'll get your high rankings back.
